Lifted high in the air, colorful hot air balloons float across the sky. Recently we attended a “Glow” event watching the crews set up balloons to light them up in the night sky. So beautiful.

What does it take to prepare a balloon for flight? Here are a few of the requirements I observed:

Pilot: Trained and certified, must be aware of weather conditions, wind speeds, and other variables to ensure a safe flight.

Equipment: Basket, straps, cords, ignition source, balloon–all safety inspected and ready to fly. Launchpad: An open space for lift-off.

Crew: A team to unpack the basket, layout the balloon, and fill it with air.

Chase Crew: This team drives below the balloon as closely as possible to support the landing and repacking.

The list of requirements for hot air balloons parallels what we need for a healthy life of faith.

Pilot: Jesus. More than certified, God knows the conditions and variables in our lives. Equipment: Bible–the map to direct our path.

The Ignition Source: The Holy Spirit fills us with faith and prepares our hearts for loving service. Crew: Parents, teachers, pastors, grandparents, sponsors teach us about Jesus and pray for our faith.

Launchpad: Our home, church, workplace, neighborhood—the places we live out our faith.

Chase Crew: Brothers and sisters of faith who encourage us, hold us accountable, and support our growth in the Lord.

While hot air balloon destinations can be altered by changes in prevailing air currents, our final destination as a Christian is secure. Our Heavenly Father waits with eagerness to welcome us home at His appointed time.
