Sitting with God in the Presence of Our Enemies
by Ruth Schmeckpeper
Don’t you love Psalm 23? Me too. The words of God providing for our needs, refreshing our souls, and guiding us bring hope and comfort. Then the section about how He walks with us through the darkest valleys of our lives gives me goosebumps. We have nothing to fear because He is God.
I usually read through verse 5 without much thought. However, in a devotion shared by Michelle Rayburn at Write to Publish, I heard that scripture in a new way:
“You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.” —Psalm 23:5a
God invites us to sit with Him, not because He will remove our enemies, but to let us know we are not alone. He meets us in the middle of life’s battles and reminds us that His presence is enough.
David knew this well. He fought lions, faced the Philistines, endured betrayal, and even experienced rebellion within his own family. We might not face those kinds of enemies, but we carry our own battles: worries, fears, insecurities, finances, health concerns, broken relationships, and the things we cling to for control.
What worries you today?
Friend, we can trust God. Praise Him. Hand Him the specific things that weigh you down. He is already at the table, longing to hear your heart, quiet your fears, and fill you with peace and joy.
Someday, we’ll sit at the table He has prepared for eternity—a celebration of victory over our soul’s greatest enemies. Can you imagine the joy?
