Encouragement Wrapped in Words

Jesus is the Light of the World

Flickering flames of light fascinate me. Even the tiniest flame in a totally dark room brings a hope that dispels darkness. When I sit in darkness, looking at the light, I feel a warmth and connectedness to it. I feel at peace.

Jesus says in John 8:12 “I am the Light of the world; the man who follows me shall certainly not walk in the dark, but shall have the light of Life.”

How is Jesus light to us? When I compare Jesus to a candle, I see that he is kind and gentle with me as I meet him for my morning devotions and prayer. As I close my eyes, sit back in my chair and think about him, he replaces the worry and the hurry of my life with quiet and a deep peace.  He invites me to soak in the love that he has for me and just be. He reminds me to fix my eyes on him instead of my situation and to find my hope in the God who is bigger than any problem.

Jesus changes me with the warmth of his love. My situation might not change, but with a Jesus perspective, I can deal with trouble at a completely different level.  He says in John 16:33, “In the world there will be tribulation, but be of good cheer, for I have overcome the world.”

He is a light beyond any candle. He is the way, the truth, the light. He came to our sin-darkened world, our sin-darkened lives and brought hope. He teaches us about the Father and the Father’s great love for us–so great that he gave his one and only son to die for us. Jesus is the light that leads us from the depths of despair to the hope of heaven.

Psalm 119:105 says. “His word is a lamp unto my feet.”  God will use his word to direct my paths and tell me how to serve him next.

When I use a candle for light, I can see just a few steps in front of me–just far enough to walk a few steps and then the light will take me a few more steps and a few more steps.  God lights my path in the same way–just enough for me to take the next steps, to trust that he will guide me through the darkness.

Today, dear friend, as you spend time with Jesus in the Word and in prayer, give him your heart. Sit quietly and feel his love soak into you. Give him your worry and your hurry. Feel him replace it with his peace. Let him prioritize your day.  Then live your day in confidence and joy, one step at a time.
